Spravato Treatment Q & A

What is Spravato treatment?

Spravato treatment, or esketamine medication, is an FDA-approved nasal spray designed to help people with treatment-resistant depression. It may reduce symptoms and benefit your mood if you’re struggling with major depressive disorder (MDD).

If you haven’t found relief from depression with antidepressants on their own, Dr. Sanchez may recommend combining your current medication therapy with Spravato treatment to improve your condition.

While Spravato is an innovative treatment in the field of psychiatry, it has been shown to offer favorable outcomes for many patients. Some patients have even noticed an improvement in their symptoms within 24 hours*.

As a part of your depression care plan, Dr. Sanchez may recommend talk therapy, nutritional or lifestyle changes, and spiritual enlightenment to maximize your benefits.

How does Spravato treatment work?

Spravato treatment is only available in-office. You’ll take the medication via a nasal spray while Dr. Sanchez monitors you for at least two hours to reduce your risk of side effects. Before using the medicine, you may need to blow your nose thoroughly.

As the medication takes effect, it can make you sleepy and cause dissociation or “out of body” sensations. You may also experience nausea and dizziness.

After treatment with Spravato, it’s important you refrain from driving or performing other activities that require full alertness. Have a close friend or family member drive you home. You can return to your normal activities the next day following a restful sleep.

Is Spravato treatment right for me?

Dr. Sanchez reviews your medical history and discusses your symptoms and treatment goals before prescribing Spravato.

If you have major depression but haven’t had success with other treatments, Dr. Sanchez may recommend Spravato treatment. However, there are some health conditions that may affect your candidacy for the medication.

Spravato treatment generally isn’t recommended if you have one of the following conditions:

  • Have a history of brain injury or stroke
  • Have high blood pressure or arrhythmia
  • Have liver problems
  • Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed

Additionally, Spravato may not be right for you if you have a history of substance misuse or psychosis.

If you’re interested in Spravato treatment, call Venice Sanchez, MD, or make an appointment online to find out how it can benefit you.
